In October 2021 a delegation of six Indigenous Mayan Zapatista women arrived in Scotland as part of ‘The Journey for Life’, to spread the living seeds of rebellion and resistance against the global capitalist system. They travelled for 10 days across the country, meeting collectives and grassroots organisations ‘from below and the left,’ all committed from different perspectives and fronts to dismantling the current system of oppression: from combating poverty in Edinburgh to organising around migrant and gendered issues in Glasgow, from fighting for Scottish workers’ rights and economic democracy to campaigning for the survival of Gaelic language and culture; from resisting gentrification and promoting equal land distribution in Skye to building solidarity and mutual aid with marginalised communities in the outskirts of Glasgow, and many more.
Six months after their journey to Scotland, we would like to hold a space to share stories and experiences of these extraordinary encounters with the Zapatista compañeras.
We will show the documentary “People without faces”, followed by an informal discussion on the film and the stories of the Journey for Life in Scotland.
The event will feature a Mexican meal on arrival (vegan and vegetarian options, first come first served basis, pay as you can) and will be followed by a social with fiesta and music!
Tea and coffee will be available. Accessible venue (entry on street level via main gate and through the basement space). BYB for the party. We will have a stall with products coming from Mexico.
Please bring cash to make your donation for food or to purchase one of the products. All profits from the event will be donated to the Zapatista communities in Chiapas to support their autonomous projects.
This event is organised by Scotland Zapatista (part of the UK-wide Zapatista Solidarity Network), a group of individuals and collectives who came together to welcome the Zapatista delegation in Scotland.
Contact scotlandzapatista@riseup.net for more info and questions on the event.
